Live painting collaboration during “Lessons and Carols” by Mr. Gillette, Kea Gillette, Katie Joe, and Daily Schenck. Latex paint on birch panel. 4ft x 8ft. December 4, 2024.
During the hour-long performance of Lessons and Carols at Providence Baptist Church, Mr. Gillette (Brother Bryn), and three rotating singing performers: Kea, Dailey, and Katie, painted this large scale visualization of the Christmas story. Katie and Brother Bryn began on the left side with “Creation” and moved in chronological order from left to right while the CCS administration read parallel biblical passages and the Middle and Upper school choirs beautifully sang out the story. This 3D gospel of Word, Song, and Image continued through “The Fall” of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden as humanity descended into the darkness of sin. In the depths of time, at the center of the Metanarrative, Kea joined the group to paint the Christmas Star illuminating the way for wise men and shepherds to Christ’s birth. Rising over “Golgotha- the Hill of the Skull”, we see the foretold reason for Christ’s birth: to be the sacrificial Savior of the world. Dailey rotated in at the end and finished the painting and the story in the upper right with the two trees on life on either side of the river flowing from the heavenly Jerusalem, when Christ’s second coming will bring the restoration of all things.
